13 Friday 18th January 0611 Hours.

Graveyard shift.

They say it is darkest before dawn. There was about two hours to go before sunrise and an indistinct line of light was starting to spread in the East. It is certainly coldest before dawn. As I crouched in yet another ditch sucking on a freezing pebble to try and prevent my breath sending out clouds of vapour.

I'd dropped Archie and Clara at John's country pad. A modest six bedroomed affair dating back to the English civil war and set in more acreage than I had the time or inclination to count. Some of Archie's gloom began to dispel when Sir John produced a vintage bottle of French cognac. I availed myself of the first decent cup of coffee in what felt like several lifetimes. A medium roast made in a cafetiere. I also located another dose of pain killers.

I had wanted to get back to my proposed killing ground before it got light so I could take a look around. I was quite literally and figuratively stumbling in the dark again. Mehmet had disposed of any effective audit trail to his activities. Whether he had actually burned them in the fire at Archie's office or had removed them first made little difference at this point. While I had to take in the fact that my best source for leverage on Mehmet was gone, Archie had to accept the fact that now that he had finally become a loose end that Mehmet would want to tie up.

I wasn't sure about Sir John either. I'm naturally suspicious about people I've just met and as rule like to do some kind of background check. Circumstances had prevented that so far. It wasn't his relationship with Clara that bothered me either. It wasn't an ego boost he wanted from his paid time with Clara, it was companionship. If I had any feeling left at that time in the morning I might have found it quite touching. No it was Sir John's comment about The Dets., or 14 Intelligence company as they were otherwise known.

14 Int. were not a well publicised unit. They carried out work not unlike mine, mostly in Northern Ireland during what's almost comically called ‘The Troubles’. By dropping The Dets into our initial meet and greet he'd said a great deal without saying a lot. It gave us a common frame of reference that saved a lot of my time explaining. It also accounted for his use of escorts, particularly Clara. If, as I suspected, he came from some kind of secret background there would be the same attraction between him and Clara as I had with her. He may be long retired but he'd still have contacts and I wasn't sure how that could effect me or if I could even trust him.

Sir John had lent me some gloves and a olive green woollen cap along with an Ordnance Survey map and green quilted body warmer. I was almost dressed for the hunt. He'd offered me a Beretta over and under shotgun, which I'd declined.
